There are a variety of reasons your computer might ask to be restarted. The most common answer is that an update needs to be installed. These updates are important to keep your computer running at peak performance and to help keep your computer secure.

When your computer asks to be restarted, you should restart when it is convenient for you. By default, your computer updates are configured to wait 7 days from when they are first released to when your computer will automatically restart to install them. If you want to know the date your computer will automatically restart, you can go into Settings > Windows update. The restart date will be listed there.

Now, this DOES NOT mean you should wait until that date to install the updates. Your computer will attempt to choose a time when you won’t be using it to install the updates, but if it cannot determine that time accurately, it will randomly choose a time and notify you of that time. Once this happens, it cannot be delayed.

If you want to inform the computer of a time more convenient for you to install the updates, you may do so by going to Settings > Windows update and selecting the dropdown next to "Restart now". Select "Schedule restart" then choose a date and time in the popup window.
