If you are unable to open a SharePoint site or receive an access error, follow these steps.

Symptoms

  • You receive an “Access Denied” message.
  • A SharePoint site won’t load.
  • You are prompted to request access.
  • Pages load blank or with errors

Common Causes

  • You do not have permissions to access the site.
  • You are not signed in with your work account.
  • Your session has expired.
  • Network or connectivity issues.

Step-by-Step Fix

Try this first

  1. Close your web browser
  2. Restart your computer
  3. Open your browser and try accessing the site again

Check your connection

  1. Make sure you are connected to the internet
  2. Try opening a website (for example, https://google.com)

Re-enter your credentials

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com.
  2. Sign out if you are currently signed in.
  3. Sign back in using your work email.
  4. Try accessing the site again.

Request access

  1. Open the SharePoint link
  2. If prompted, click Request access
  3. Make sure you are signed in with the correct account
  4. If you have multiple accounts, sign out of all accounts and sign back in with only your work account.

Check browser issues

  1. Try opening the site with a different browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.)
  2. Try using a private/incognito window, if possible
  3. Clear your browser cache and cookies

If That Doesn't Work

  • Try accessing SharePoint from the portal: https://portal.office.com, then click SharePoint.
  • Try using a different browser and/or device.
